Peer Critique. Is there clearly stated theme? Are there typos? Are there sources for the resource images? Are the patterns interlocking and have visual complexity or are they merely dang grids?
Work Large to small.
Biggest areas first. Divide and conquer. Don’t ‘paint the room’. Don’t leap to the details first: that is being premature.
Blur Your Eyes
In a your life drawing classes (Rapid Visualization, Analysis of Form) you are trained to simplify form and shape. The same techniques are applied here: Blur eyes to see shapes, not names of objects.
Get visual, not verbal. This is a drawing exercise and will open up your ability to visualize in other tasks and contexts.
Work with shape
Close your paths. Make shapes. Don’t make a bunch of strings, unless a texture is necessary. But that is down the road. Texture is a final concern, not something that needs to be worked out now.
You are not creating a jigsaw puzzle.
Shapes needn’t fit together in that way. Instead, overlap elements, cover up edges. Work smart, not hard
Speaking of which: Organize Layers
from the start: title and group as you go. Things get confusing very quickly if you don’t. If it’s out of control, stop and organize. Select object(s) to be moved in Layers. Cut them to the clipboard. Create a Layer as a destination. Edit>Paste in Place.
Back to front.
Set the background color/mesh object as a big rectangle. Choose the dominant color with the eyedropper from your photo.
Eyedropper and Swatches.
Take color samples from your raster image and add them to Swatches using the swatches panel menu>create new.
You don’t have to use the Mesh tool
You don’t have to use the Mesh tool for everything. You don’t have to use the Mesh tool/mesh objects at all. Using Blurs, transparency and graphic styles can create the needed effects with greater ease of use.
The Graphic Styles panel stores fill, stroke, opacity, effects. If you need shadows or highlights. Create a graphic style containing the dark fill, low opacity, blur. All of that can then be applied with a click to selected paths.
Blend options, Blend Spine editing. Closed paths as blend members versus open paths as blend members. Transitioning between blurred members to non blurred members, Opaque to transparent members.
Control click eyeball in Layers Panel.
Eyedropper tool (i).
Mesh tool (u).
In extremely oddly shaped areas: Mesh is rectangular in nature, does not perform well in irregular shapes, large appendages. Instead, apply the gradient mesh to a rectangular object, use irregular shape as a clipping mask. This ensures fine control over both.
Option click on Layers eyeball icon hides all but that layer or sublayer, isolates visually.
Command Y toggles Illustrator into (and out of) Outline View. Equivalent to View<Outline View
Command click on Layers eyeball puts only that layer (does not function with sublayers) into Outline view.
Eyedropper tool to sample from raster image.
